History:
Dragon Boat racing was born out of myth and legend more than 2000 years ago in
Southern China. It commemorates the life and death of Qu Yuan, a great patriot , poet
and political advisor who died in 228 B.C., when he threw himself into the Mi Lo River.
When news of his death spread, local fisherman raced out onto the water and splashed
their paddles to prevent fish from eating his body.

Dragon Boat racing is one of the fastest growing water sports in the
world. Over two million people participate in these races worldwide.
Action packed contests begin with a crew of 20 paddlers led by the
loud, steady beat of the drummer. As the long and colorful boats
compete, an ancient rite is revisited all in the spirit of fun and charity.
"Hic sunt dracones"
Latin for Here Be
Dragons. This phrase
was used on ancient
maps to designate
unexplored areas.
